Disney Infinity Drops Support for Apple TV, Opens Door for Exclusive Apps

After introducing the new Apple TV and Siri remote last September, Apple seemed to be making the move to become an iOS-style home game console. While its foray into the gaming world is off to a slow start, there is still hope for Apple TV to make an impact on the market for TV-based games.

The biggest setback for Apple TV was the loss of support from Disney Interactive, who announced earlier in March that they were dropping support for the Apple TV version of Disney Infinity 3.0 to focus on more traditional gaming platforms. Those who currently have the game can still play, but any new Disney Infinity figures released won’t work with the Apple TV version.

Disney also stopped continuing support for the PC version of Disney Infinity, so it is likely that the game is better suited for traditional gaming consoles overall, and it is not necessarily an issue with Apple TV.

Since these changes, however, a Disney spokesperson has stated that they will continue to support Apple TV as a gaming platform. They have been, and will continue to release new games for Apple TV, such as Duck Tales: Remastered, throughout the year. Additional titles are also currently in development.

While Disney Infinity 3.0 didn’t work out for Apple TV, game developers are focused on new types of games, much like the way iOS generated a market for numerous touch-based and free-to-play games that never existed on other platforms.

The new Apple TV hardware is still relatively young, so those who are looking for it to serve as a gaming console can still expect an improvement in the outlook. It’s highly likely that an incredible app – exclusive to Apple TV, or at least released first on that platform – is already in development for their game console that will rival the other more established consoles or PC gaming options. Additionally, with its relatively small price tag, intuitive remote, and easy-to-use media apps, the Apple TV is an excellent choice for parents of young children who are begging for a gaming console. They’ll get a full suite of apps and features that they can enjoy, and kids can get a gaming console that allows them to play many familiar and brand-new games at a much lower price tag than other gaming consoles.
